Mets Owner Steve Cohen Seeks Council Support for Citi Field Casino Project

Steve Cohen, the billionaire owner of the New York Mets, is making waves with his proposal to transform the Citi Field parking lot into a bustling casino complex. While his vision holds promise, it faces a complex web of lobbying, legislative steps, and community input.

Mets Owner Seeks Council Support

Cohen’s quest to turn the Citi Field parking lot into a casino hub involves substantial lobbying efforts. In the early months of this year, Cohen and his team spent nearly $100,000 on lobbyists to garner support from the City Council.

The initial steps are already underway, with State Assembly member Jeffrion Aubry introducing a park alienation bill in March. This bill marks the first crucial step in authorizing development on the 50-acre property surrounding Citi Field, officially designated as parkland.

However, the next critical step lies with State Senator Jessica Ramos, who has yet to introduce a similar bill in the state Senate. With the state’s legislative session ending soon, time is of the essence.

Ramos has expressed the need for thorough consideration, emphasizing the importance of public input. She envisions the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) to involve local communities in the decision-making process.

The Quest for Downstate Casino Licenses

Cohen’s endeavor is part of a broader competition for one of three downstate licenses for casinos in New York. Notable contenders include the Related Companies and Wynn Resorts, who are pushing for a casino at Hudson Yards, and SL Green Realty Corp., aiming for a casino in Times Square.

The Citi Field bid centers on the 50-acre parking lot adjacent to the stadium, officially city-owned parkland. The proposal envisions transferring the land to Cohen’s entity, New Green Willets, with provisions that return the land to the city if the casino project doesn’t materialize.

Community Voices and Future Visions

Cohen’s team has initiated “visioning sessions” to gather input from residents and Mets fans about the future of the Citi Field area. These sessions have highlighted a desire for green spaces, restaurants, bars, a food hall featuring local vendors, and live entertainment.

Despite gaming being low on the priority list, Cohen’s outreach has demonstrated an eagerness to engage the local community. A canvassing effort that reached 10,000 residents revealed a strong preference for green spaces.

As the Mets’ owner continues to advocate for his casino dreams, the path forward remains uncertain. The outcome hinges on legislative moves, community input, and the willingness of various stakeholders to shape the future of the Citi Field parking lot. The saga continues, with all eyes on the next play in this high-stakes game.
